The Side Effects of Steroids

Steroids used by body builders are gonadocorticoids or anabolic steroids. These steroids are variations of the male sex hormone testosterone, first created by pharmaceutical companies in the 1950s and therefore not the same as steroids taken in RA. But if you’re taking high doses for a long time, you may be at risk of some of the same side effects as steroid tablets. You may need a short course of steroid tablets to help you recover from an asthma attack. This is most likely to be a steroid medicine called prednisolone. Your reliever inhaler (usually blue) opens up your airways when you’re having symptoms or an asthma attack.

Tablets or liquids

Myopathy can lead to muscle weakness, often in your hips and shoulders. If this happens, your legs and arms might feel weaker than usual, making some tasks difficult – for example, climbing steps, getting up from a chair, reaching to hang washing, and getting dressed. The purpose of a steroid emergency card is to help support the early recognition of adrenal crisis. Steroids are often part of treatment for both Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma, including skin (cutaneous) lymphoma.

A group of steroids called mineralocorticoids (including fludrocortisone and hydrocortisone) are sometimes used to treat adrenal crisis. When used correctly, topical corticosteroids are a safe and effective treatment for conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. However, a withdrawal reaction following long term use of these products can lead to skin redness and a burning sensation worse than the original skin condition.

Steroids for asthma

Steroid medication can also cause oral thrush (an infection in your mouth), or thrush in the vagina or penis. Steroids are naturally occurring chemicals produced from the two adrenal glands, which lie above the kidneys. During the day, when people are active, there are more glucocorticoids produced naturally.

Often steroids are taken in ‘cycles’ of weeks on, followed by weeks off, then on again. They are also used for ‘stacking’, which is where you take several types of steroids together to strengthen their effects. Anyone concerned with taking this medication should speak to their doctor. If you have troublesome side effects, don’t stop taking your medication until your doctor says it’s safe to do so. If you have diabetes already, you might need to check your blood sugar levels more often than usual. These are manufactured versions of the hormones produced by the adrenal glands . Anabolic steroids an be addictive because they  can initially make you feel great about yourself and your body.

Can you have a beer on steroids?

You might be given a small dose, known as a maintenance dose, for a long time to make sure your symptoms don’t return. You will be given the lowest possible dose for the shortest possible time, to reduce the risk of side effects. Your dose will probably be reduced gradually as your symptoms improve, or your doctor might suggest a weaker medication. Steroids are usually only given for a short time to quickly treat flare-ups of your condition.

It’s likely that many athletes and bodybuilders will swear by them and profess not to have experienced any harmful side effects. There is less chance of this happening with steroid injections or sprays. However, it can occasionally happen if they’re used at high doses and for a long time. If a woman needs to take steroid tablets whilst she is breastfeeding, prednisolone is usually recommended.
